We live in a world presently being torn apart by war and terrorism. A climate of greed and resentment which is growing in intensity. Accordingly, on this page for the twelve months from October 2006 I intend to post the twelve pieces of advice given by Robert Louis Stevenson to enhance one’s life. Stevenson (b 1772 in Glasgow), was better known as the author of “Treasure Island”, “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” and “Kidnapped”, to name but a few. His early life was beset by constant health problems. So serious were they that his parents sent him abroad for a better climate to ease his condition. Yet, despite all this misfortune, he was renowned for his constant joy of life and his good spirits, always positive, seeing the good in the bleakest situation. When asked how he managed this feat in the face of such adversity, he listed his twelve pieces of advice, to which I have added the odd comment for the 21st century. (Month 4) You can never please
everyone so don’t let criticism hurt you. |
